At 18 she left a “religious cult” to study the cello in the American south. Moving to New York a few years later, she became part of Dev Hynes and Solange Knowles’ crew. In March 1993 she placed herself in the aftermath of the Rodney King riots at a housing project called Imperial Courts in South Central LA. The work she made there is a complex and evocative record of an underserved community, a microcosm for poverty and racial tension around the world. We met her in issue #8 to talk about the project that would still resonate with audiences decades later.  Read more >
