Maya is co-founder of graphic design outlet, Studio Safar, the amazing magazine, Journal Safar and is editor-in-chief of Al Hayya Magazine. In 2020 she left Beirut after the explosion that devastated much of the city, relocating to Montreal, Canada.

How are you doing today?

You know what? Today I’m actually doing alright. And before today, I would have probably felt too guilty to say I wasn’t doing alright.

You left Lebanon for Canada last year after the explosion that destroyed large parts of Beirut. This was on top of a global pandemic. How did you process everything that was going on at the time?

Most of the decisions I took after the explosion were impulsive. I really took things day by day. If the period around the explosion taught me anything, it was that in Beirut, you literally only live once.

Though most would argue impulsive decisions are reckless, I think intuitive decisions are done with a lot of self-care.

How do you feel about being in Canada now and being far from home?

I am here, this is home and it makes me very happy. The distance to my hometown is relative and exists in my mind. I love this city. I choose to be here today, but tomorrow is a different story.

Was there something or someone in particular that has helped ease the stress?

Not something or someone in particular, but more an idea— that nothing is ever carved in stone, and the decisions I take are entirely mine.

When things have been overwhelming is there a piece of advice or guidance that you go back to that helps you find peace?

Absolutely—the realization that the world’s always been a dark, dark place. That comforts me, somehow.

Though most would argue impulsive decisions are reckless, I think intuitive decisions are done with a lot of self-care.

How has your experience of the last 18 months influenced your work?

I’ve produced a lot of work in the last 18 months, that intuition I mentioned earlier has helped me push things forward a lot.

How has the last 18 months influenced your outlook on life moving forward?

It's taught me that I’m never ready on time.

What is your cultural balm for when you're feeling overwhelmed?

My father's memories.

Is there a dish you always turn to when you need comfort?

Anything cooked or prepared by close friends has always warmed my heart. There is nothing more comforting to me than sharing food.

What gives you hope?

When I realize that people are listening.

What does the world need more of right now?

Empathy, kindness, and feistiness.
