After living through a restricted and frankly overwhelming time, we’re all now expanding into a newfound freedom.
We’re finding our way again physically, moving our bodies after a long time of being still and exploring new landscapes and experiences. Whether you’re heading excitedly into a sweaty club, dancing freely in a festival field or taking things slowly with small gatherings and solo excursions, there’s a sense that everyone is finding their own way into this new way of being.
Without the limitations of lockdown life, our minds are also free to wander again. Creative ideas that have been in hibernation are now coming to life via various modes of expression, finding new life online, in books and magazines or exhibitions and live events.
In partnership with Squarespace, we have asked four artists, Amaal Said, Christina Nwabugo, Iringó Demeter and Sirui Ma, to create a series of images representing what this newfound freedom means to them. Rather than making grand, sweeping statements, each artist contemplates intimate, personal expressions of freedom, a connection to nature or their body, a quiet moment in a new neighbourhood and a reclamation of physical power and vulnerability.
Each of the artists involved spoke to us about how their creative response to the idea of freedom and how they find it in their own lives.
We’ll be hosting an online conversation with Amaal, Christina, Iringó, and Sirui on the 16th August, 6 – 7 pm GMT, to delve into some of the themes they touch on in their work and discuss their thoughts on freedom. It’s free to join, simply RSVP here.
