Levi's Made & Crafted: Sharp Focus
Recently Riposte hosted a talk with Paola Antonelli, the curator of design and architecture at MoMA. During the talk Paola discussed her new exhibition, Items: Is Fashion Modern. Through a collection of 111 items the exhibition looks at designs that have had a strong impact on history and society in the 20th and 21st centuries, and continue to hold currency today.
Included in the line-up are designs as well-known and transformative as the Levi’s 501's®. The show raises the question of whether fashion is modern when it feeds an obsession with fast fashion and clothes that are designed and made to be worn once. Far from being throwaway fashion, a Levi’s garment is made to last, with an integrity throughout and attention to detail that inspires an enduring and loyal following. It’s a brand that can genuinely claim links to in uential movements of the past whilst being rmly rooted in contemporary culture.
Since its inception in 2010, Levi’s Made & Crafted has come to represent this perfect marriage of the history of Levi’s and modern style. Each Levi’s Made & Crafted collection is created from premium materials, using the best construction techniques and meticulous detailing. For this story we have showcased the beautiful details of the new Levi’s Made & Crafted SS17 collection. Taking inspiration from the kaleidoscopic culture of Cuba, the team’s designers have used the sun-drenched vibe of Havana throughout the collection and contrasted it against a vibrant and rich tropicana colour palette found throughout the country. The new pieces are rich with elevated details, artful construction and historical Levi’s in uences that play out in unexpected ways. ◆
